Registration is now open for VI-ISERP / STEM Institute summer teacher training program. Based at the University of the Virgin Islands, the program offers a two-week summer professional development opportunity for in-service teachers who teach grades 6-12.
Teacher Professional Development Institute
The Virgin Islands Institute for STEM Education Research and Practice (VI-ISERP, or the STEM Institute), based at the University of the Virgin Islands, offers a two-week summer professional development opportunity for in-service teachers who teach grades 6-12, plus a new third week for invited teams of teachers.
By the end of the summer, teachers will create Project-Based Learning (PBL) units to use in their classrooms during the 2017-2018 school year. Training also includes technology integration (such as a robotics camp), alignment with standards (Next Generation Science Standards and Common Core State Standards for Mathematics), and leadership development.
Participants will earn a stipend upon completion of PBL unit plans. Enrollment preference will be given to teams of teachers from the same school who plan to create PBL units that integrate different areas of STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics).
The dates for this year’s summer institute are listed below. Most trainings will be held at UVI’s St. Thomas campus.
Week 1: June 26-30
Week 2: July 3 (Emancipation Day activity) and July 5-7
Week 3 (for invited teams): late August, to be arranged among participants
Below is a description of each
professional development session:
Highlighting the “T.E.” in STEM: Integrating Technology and Engineering Design Principles into Science and Math (June 26-29, 9 am-12 pm).
During this session, teachers may gain experience in coding, computing, robotics, and/or 3D printing.
Assessment of Student Learning: Teachers as Researchers (July 5-6, 9 am-12 pm).
During this session, teachers will learn and practice using realtime methods for formative and summative assessment, including NGSS 3D assessments, in their classes by collecting qualitative and quantitative data on student engagement and content mastery.
Three-Dimensional Learning and Mathematical Modeling as Foundations for Project-Based Learning (June 26-29 and July 5-6, 1-5 pm).
During this session, teacher teams will build project-based learning units for the upcoming academic year.
Leadership Summit: Teachers as Leaders (June 30, July 7).
During this session, administrators and teachers will discuss issues concerning additional resources needed to support teachers as leaders, including: "How to facilitate teacher collaborations?", "How to support this process as a part of the teacher evaluation process?", "How to be leaders in the school?". Participants will work on developing a vision of model classrooms and model classroom teachers in STEM for their school, as well as locally effective leadership strategies for STEM education.
