VI-ISERP supports post-secondary efforts to improve teaching and learning. This is accomplished by facilitating the integration of authentic research and active learning in the undergraduate STEM curriculum at UVI. Researchers and teaching faculty work together to bring specific projects into the curriculum. The projects chosen have shown past success and serve as models for research-based courses and modules. Well-designed assessment plans are implemented to measure students’ abilities to think scientifically, formulate hypotheses, and design experiments.
One example of past project integrated research into a two semester Introductory Chemistry course was a challenge for students to analyze water samples for impurities. The research focus was 'How safe is your drinking water?'
Pre- and Post- attitudes and knowledge survey gauged participants knowledge before and after the course.
Research focus is further development and refined.
Additional water testing experiments are undertaken
EPA Laboratory certification for water testing
Successful program models are used to inform the project.
